This crazy year grinds to a close with Mercury, The Trickster, in charge of Communication, Intelligence, Networks and Information, in the retrograde phase of its cycle. Next year, of course, will start with Mercury still following his own...read more

Today, at the Full Moon with the Sun in Pisces and the Moon in Virgo, we are ripe for considering just what it is we believe (Pisces) and which of those beliefs are serving our conscious intentions and higher purpose for our lives and which are due for uprooting (Virgo) so we can heal (Virgo) both body and mind.
It seems so easy to stay in our comfort zones. After all, we know how it all works there. Although we might not like some of what goes on, it is familiar. What happens is predictable, even if it hurts our feelings or keeps us feeling small. To challenge what to us seems normal can feel impossible. It’s just the way it is. Isn’t it?
Well, it’s the way it is until we decide this is no longer okay with us. As children, we receive a lifetime’s worth of messages about who we are or are not, the ways in which we have been judged and found lacking, or what we believed to be true about ourselves because someone in authority said so when we were small and we’ve never forgotten how terrible it made us feel. These are the seeds of unworthiness, oftentimes unwittingly planted by the adults around us who themselves had never emotionally matured. Once those seeds take root, they sprout up everywhere, reinforcing the message that somehow we are not okay and must fight to overcome our seemingly inherent unworthiness. This is one vicious circle. The more we resist our perceived ‘failings’, the more harsh and critical the messages become. The messages have become part of our belief system. Even though we may not like them, we believe them to be true on deep, subconscious levels of ourselves. And since our beliefs form the structure that creates our reality, as long as we do not challenge them, we will continue to experience the same doubts, fears and insecurities that we always have.
If we are ready to remove ourselves from the merry-go-round of insanity, (which, by definition, is doing the same thing repeatedly, each time expecting a different outcome), we’re going to have to stretch beyond the tried and true. In this case, something being true does not make it correct or optimal. Something can be true for us because we have made it so by our acquiescence to our experience of it. Once we stop to investigate just what it is we are buying into, we begin to see the beliefs that have kept that pattern alive. And we see that on some level of our being, the belief is true for us.
As one of my favorite teachers, Bentinho Massaro says, “You can’t win from a belief.” We can fight but we will never win as long as that belief is still accepted. So, instead of fighting, we sit with the belief. We consciously acknowledge the truth of it, on the level that it has operated. And then we start to see through it to a greater truth of who we are. Not only are we not unworthy, we are infinitely worthy, here, in this life to wake up to the Truth of who we are as heart-centered beings of Love and Light, here to make a holy difference, each in our own way. .
As we extend ourselves beyond the limitations of the programming that once shaped us, our psyches begin to mend, new connections are made within us and fresh possibilities appear before us. Every time we find ourselves upset or out of sorts we have the opportunity to inquire deeper. Ask yourself what you must believe in order for the pattern you are playing out to continue occurring in your life. We cannot heal or change anything that we have not brought to consciousness. This is how we become more aware. This is how our enlightenment occurs. Every shadow of false belief about who we are that we release allows us to see and experience the world in which we live with less distortion, more joy, less strife and more flow. Our Authentic Self has never been wounded or damaged. As we align more fully with the Love that we are, the old habits of playing small and worrying about what others think dissolve and we bring more unbridled creativity to all that we do.
May the Truth of your heart light the way and guide you ever onward to the life you came, with stars in your eyes, to live, full out.
This is a quote from my chat with Adela Rubio for the 30 Day BIG Shifts program. You can find the page with notes from our talk here. The chat will be available for you to hear at 1:00 PM PDT/4:00 PM EDT.
Currently, Mercury is retrograde and we just had an energetic whopper of an eclipse with this week’s Aries Full Moon on October 8th. In this on-going climate of global change, this is an excellent time for releasing anything that no longer serves the greater vision of your life. Whether we are aware of it or not. Whether we embrace change or run from it, nothing is as it was, even a year ago. To gracefully move through these kinds of changes is to become masters of letting go and shifting our perspective. As we stop and take a deeper look at the big shifts that happen in our lives, we see the hidden benefit, unrealized blessing and benevolent boost that allows us to break free of the patterns of the past so we can go where our hearts would take us, given half a chance.
One of the things I discussed with Adela was my struggle with being what Elaine Aron called a Highly Sensitive Person, in her book by that name. It took a long time to realize that my empathy and clairsentience was my ticket to deeper realms of experiencing life below the surface and understanding, first of all, that we are all energetically connected and secondly, what made other people tick, so I could assist them in navigating their own inner worlds of mystery, wisdom and wonder. Once I began to really use my empathy as a guide, it helped me know where to go, exactly the right person to speak with, when to leave, who to say yes to and when to say no. The more I embrace my empathy and allow it to inform me, the easier it is to know and let go. Our spiritual gifts and talents are here to serve not only those around us but to show us beyond a shadow of a doubt, what works for us and will move us most swiftly to the people and places that are perfect for where we are in our lives now.
I hope that if you are in the midst of big life changes you look into this wonderful program Adela is facilitating. She’s put together a powerful Transformation Team, each of whom has lots of experience to share and insightful offerings and tools for surfing times of change with ease and Grace.
The more shifty you get with adapting to change, the more easily you’ll flow and know.
Big Love to you in your BIG Shifts,
Welcome springtime! The Sun enters Aries this morning. Ecstasy, one of my favorite Maxfield Parrish paintings, has hung in my home for twenty years. When I bought it, I was in the midst of a steep and exhausting climb up a mountain of self discovery and spiritual awakening. Ecstasy evoked hope during those dark days and pointed to the only outcome I was willing to entertain. And then one day spring returned…
A few years ago I wrote this piece that seems just right for today.
My tracks are faint now, fading with the sands of time. As I step into this new phase the path shifts direction. The long trek up the mountain well worth every challenging step.
From here, I can see forever. From here, I can easily fly. From here, I can be seen and heard. I’m strong enough now and ready. My journey has taught me to release the heavy baggage. I don’t need it anymore. I learned to look gravity in the eye and defy it rather than allowing it to define me.
I’m free now to delight in life and make some fresh tracks. Or take to the sky and fly.

Wishing you every delight of the season as winter gives way to spring and sparks wonderful new beginnings on your path.
With Big Love,
The Sun entered Pisces a few days ago. The symbol for Pisces is two fish swimming in opposite directions. This is the sign of the ocean, high creativity, imagination, spirituality and dreams. Things are morphy in the territory Pisces oversees. This is the last sign of the astrological year and the final month of winter, when old forms are ‘laid to rest’ so something new can be born with the spring. As we open our hearts and let go of what has been, our bodies recycle the rich, ripe compost of past experiences and transform our lives.
This picture was taken by Cadence of Cadencia Photography on the final morning of the hoop dance retreat I attended in Hawaii, in January. Twenty-seven women had just spent a week hooping, doing yoga, sharing meals, most of us sleeping under the same roof, and finally, doing a guided sunrise meditation on the last morning. We had shared so much it was hard to imagine this life-changing retreat ending. I watched the sun come into view, then closed my eyes and took a deep breath of ocean-fueled air. As I let it out salty tears began to flow. Waves of gratitude, joy, love and great sadness that it was over rose and fell. I looked around to see that I was not the only one.
And then I heard the voice in my head answering my unspoken protest. “Only through letting go can you know what this time was really about and reap the bounty of benefits it has seeded in your experience. To hold on is to lose all of that.” This retreat felt magical because the people, activities and elements came together and interacted in a dynamic dance. Everyone has had those times of heightened energy and joyful interaction that inevitably come to an end. If we can shift gears, afterward and allow ourselves a period of rest and recovery the process of integration will take place.
In this past month since the retreat ended I craved sleep, spent time in quiet contemplation and shied away from too much activity that would take me out of myself. During this time, I recovered precious pieces of myself that I had long ago abandoned. The retreat sparked an unexpected awakening and re-membering of my life.
Tomorrow is the Pisces New Moon. Time for fresh starts and new creative projects. Just don’t be surprised if things change as you go along. Pisces is all about dancing with the Divine and going with the flow. Where it will take you, nobody knows. As the old song says, ‘The best things happen when you’re dancing…’ Enjoy!
With an ocean of Love,
2013 has been a year of tremendous change, the world over. Sometimes it is hard to grasp how quickly things can flip or completely transform. Much has come to light that was held in secrecy for decades. At the same time, amazing new information, technologies and developments have been revealed that offer tremendous promise, reminding us that we are moving through a time like no other. The more we can reconnect to our hearts and follow the guidance they offer, the more easily we will navigate these times.
The last full moon of 2013 lit up the night sky in the sign of Gemini on December 17th. At the Solstice, on December 21/2, Venus entered its retrograde phase, to travel backward in the sign of Capricorn for the entire month of January. Astrology allows us to see the natural cycles of life and their timing: conception, becoming, flowering, peaking, distributing, diminishing, dissolving and renewal. This waning of the moon and retrograde Venus both indicate that between now and the end of the year is prime time for considering what has value (Venus) in your life today, and consciously releasing anything that no longer fits or works for you. Whether there is an old habit you’ve been meaning to change, a relationship you’ve outgrown or a closet full of clothes that you just don’t wear anymore, the stars are aligned to support you in letting go so you can once more be wholeheartedly in the flow of your life.
Freedom, the freedom to be who we really are, comes only when we have let go of all the stuff that we are not. Many of us once gladly laid claim to labels and titles and identities and stuff and nonsense, believing they made us somehow more than we were without them. Today, we want to use our creativity and intelligence and do something that not only makes our hearts sing, but makes a real difference in the world.
Waking up to the fact that nothing outside ourselves can give us any value that we don’t already possess within us can be a challenge. Continuing to do things that we know are no longer right for us, however, can feel like death. So, if you’ve been feeling the urge to let some things go, there’s never been a better time than now. In lightening up now, you create a vacuum that allows you to attract something new that feels just right.
Wishing you all a peaceful late December and beautiful visions for a shiny New Year.
Though I have never been sure what ‘crystal blue persuasion’ means I’ve loved this song since the first time I heard it in 1969. It still holds up as one of my all-time favorites. In 1969 I was fourteen years old, growing up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, dreaming of living in California, away from the long, bitter-cold winters and the people who really didn’t understand me. By the fall of 1974 I was living in Northern California. It turned out most of the people I’ve met here don’t understand me either, but the sun does shine most of the time… And, over time, I connected with an ever-evolving, core group of people who are kindred spirits; sweet friends with whom I can always converse in the language of consciousness and celebrate life’s magic and mysteries.
Today, January 1st, we arrive at the gateway to this brand new year, the year that holds tremendous promise for birthing a new day for anyone ready to embrace the tranformative waves of change. Astrologically speaking, we have been in a bit of an energetic portal with Mercury turning retrograde in early December in Capricorn, traveling back through the late degrees of Sagittarius and now having resumed forward movement will offer us one more chance to tie up the loose ends we may have missed, finally tell the truth about something we couldn’t admit to until now or correct something that has never felt right. On December 20th/21st we had the Gemini Lunar Eclipse at the very last (known as the critical) degree of Gemini, further amplifying the need and desire to say what is on our minds and in our hearts. January 4th is the first new moon of the year–this one is the Capricorn Solar Eclipse. Capricorn is the sign of manifestation, discipline and giving structure and order to our lives. The energy mounts as we approach an eclipse and only after the fact that we begin to realize what it has all been about. We are starting this year in an energetic atmosphere that is swirling, surging and capable of shaking out anything that is no longer relevant to our lives. Speaking our truth and letting go allows life to flow in ways we could never have seen when we were shut down and holding on.
May 2011 be filled with words that are music to your ears, sights that make your heart sing, people that speak your language and time for enjoying every lovely moment!
Everywhere I turn people are talking about Mercury’s current retrograde phase. Yes, it is still retrograde. It went retrograde on September 7th and will station direct on September 29th.
Writers understand that a piece of writing is not finished until it has been edited. Writing and editing are completely different functions. While writing can be done in a flow of creative inspiration, editing requires an eye for detail, an objectivity that serves the overall piece, and a willingness to relinquish those sometimes brilliant words and passages that don’t serve the higher objective.
Mercury’s retrograde cycle essentially presents us with an opportunity for editing our lives. Every three months or so, The Messenger changes direction and shines a light on the recent or even distant past. This is a great time for finishing things, getting organized, getting caught up and letting go of some of those things that no longer serve a useful purpose.
If you are attempting to make something new happen now, keep in mind that set-backs reveal areas in which communication was not clear or something needs to be repaired or addressed. Patience and several deep breaths work wonders should it be necessary to back up a few steps in order to get something right.
While Mercury is retrograde, progress happens by going backward. This is an excellent time to reconsider, revise, revamp, restore, refresh, research, realize, revisit, renew and relinquish. I love making a list of re- words that remind me of what an empowering period this is, if I choose to make the most of it. I’d love to hear some of your favorites.
Remember, retreat, relax and enjoy your favorite forms of recreation!
Did you see that crazy moon last night? Not only was it full and bright, it was the third in a series of eclipses that started a month ago. This Lunar Eclipse right in the middle of the never-a-dull-moment sign, Aquarius, followed the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn on July 7, the Solar Eclipse in Cancer on July 21. I don’t know about you, but I have had an amazing summer, unlike any other, these past couple of months. Having gotten better at letting go, I feel a sense of personal freedom and wonder at how quickly things are changing. After years of studying the effects of eclipses this last series felt especially intense in terms of how swiftly people’s lives are changing.
The conditions in one’s natal chart will show whether an eclipse, or any astrological event, will be experienced directly, through those around us or through the collective. I have Aquarius Rising, so this eclipse occurred in my first house, the house of the personality, appearance, the instincts and the body. My experience of this eclipse was physical. I felt awash in emotion, upset by things that I would normally take in stride. Old, previously stuck emotional patterns were surfacing like waves on the beach finally available for acknowledgment and release.
The ongoing line-up of Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron in Aquarius continues to shake up the status quo and this Aquarius eclipse amplifies their effect even more. Breakthroughs are likely as the moon, still in full (manifestation) mode brings fresh light to this area of the zodiac and our lives, in breaking down old patterns and creating new potentials for something more healing, visionary, ingenious, humanitarian and inspired to occur.
This Aquarius Lunar Eclipse occurred on or very close to the natal Sun of those Aquarians with birthdays between around January 27–February 3. If that is you, expect the unexpected. You know how much you like to do things your own way, this energy is ripe for finding yourself in a situation you didn’t necessarily see coming. This is no time to sit around waiting to act on what you want. If you’ve been itching to take a chance on something, this may be your golden opportunity.
Those Geminis and Libras with birthdays between about the 27th of May or September and the 3rd of June or October (and even a few days on either side of those dates) are likely to be feeling an energetic boost from this eclipse in a positive, let’s get going and make something happen, kind of way. Full Moons are a time of manifestation. Whereas New Moons are about fresh starts.
The other fixed signs: Taurus, Leo and Scorpio are under a dynamic tension to take action now. Status quo is no longer a viable alternative for anyone, really. Change is only stressful when resisted. As much as those born under a fixed sign prefer that others make the changes so they don’t have to–I am speaking from personal experience, here–there are times when the only thing to do is accept that sometimes change is necessary and ultimately, a good thing, and then do what you know must be done.
As with any event, remember that though you may not have a conscious choice over what happens in your life, you always have a choice about how you respond to what is happening. It is much easier to navigate the river of life when we are open to accepting where we are at the moment. In being present to what is, we can make wise choices about the next step and the one after that. May your precious summer days be filled with sunshine and love.
The Sun just finished a busy journey through watery Cancer that included lots of ups and downs, two Cancer New Moons (a rare occurrence) and a couple of eclipses that set off all manner of change. Hard to believe it all happened in just a month. Family, emotions, security, nurturing, care-giving, and business have all been high priorities on the minds of most. And now, the Sun has moved into Leo. Leo is the fiery sign of the heart, ruled by the Sun. It’s time to dry those tears, put those worries aside and celebrate the gifts of life and love.
I have felt a call to dance for decades now. I was never very good at the actual dancing part but have always loved music and in my mind, at least, I knew I could move. Ten years ago I took my first dance class; a salsa class at a community center. I learned a few steps and loved the music but other things took priority and after a few sessions I stopped taking classes.
Since then I have taken a hula, jazz and belly dance. For one reason or another none of those styles or classes felt right to me. I began thinking dance wasn’t really for me, after all. Then someone told me about Nia and how it had changed her life. She said it was more than a dance or exercise class, it had become a way of life for so many women who were looking to embody their Goddess nature and live more joyfully in their bodies.
After looking for a class in the area for two years, I finally attended my first Nia class in May. Katleen, our fabulous teacher, made it easy, even for me, to follow along and before I knew it I was dancing. I wasn’t good, but I was having a great time in a room full of women moving together, led by a teacher I could relate to who so beautifully led us in this dance. We embodied our spirits, felt our connection to the Goddess, danced heaven and earth into our experience and pulsed into the joy of being alive through graceful, powerful movement.
I have been to every class since. Each time it is getting a little easier. Nia has helped me to have a joyful physical experience of stretching beyond my comfort zone, learning to think in new ways, learning to be in ways I’d never before considered. And now I’m dancing to some really fabulous music, twice a week, every week, at 8:00 AM.
Being an astrologer has meant having to step out of my personal experience of life and view it through a lens that is impersonal and detached. So many of the ideas Kathleen introduces in class are things that I have thought and written about and spoken about with others. In class, though, we bring them into the dance so the body can know and express them. Dancing has, even in this short time, helped me to be more grounded in my writing and work and to feel more present, regardless of what I am doing.
Learning to do something physical that you enjoy that stretches you beyond your comfort zone keeps you young, in mind as well as body. It strengthens you so you can more gracefully and effectively face other challenges. Grace is dependent on strength. Flexibility and being light on our feet help you to move with grace through these uncertain times. My spirit has been urging me to dance for years. It wasn’t just dance, as it turns out, it was discovering the ‘just right’ place that I am coming to through Nia, that finally delivered me to the land of ahs.
Let yourself experiment with doing new things you love. When you find the ones that make your spirit sing, you are well on your way. What is that ‘just right’ place for you? As the Sun enters Leo, remember, joy is of the essence. Take the time to play, be creative, take the spotlight if it calls you, honor your passion and lead with your heart. Celebrate being you!
