Mercury’s Retrograde on Steroids, Delaying Arrival of the New Year

mercury-1

This crazy year grinds to a close with Mercury, The Trickster, in charge of Communication, Intelligence, Networks and  Information, in the retrograde phase of its cycle. Next year, of course, will start with Mercury still following his own tracks, to see what might have been left undone or gone unnoticed, the first time around, in the early weeks of December. When the world was still reeling from one of the most contentious and unfathomable elections I’ve ever seen, I’m pretty sure there was plenty that slid through the cracks. Shock makes it difficult to concentrate. The mind struggles to grasp anything other than the unfathomable event that it doesn’t know how to categorize, much less accept as the new status quo.

Mercury traveled deep enough into Capricorn, sign of Government, Corporations, and External Authority, to touch base with Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, overseer of Power, Transformation, Sex and Death. Pluto can show Mercury how to get deep; go dark; become serious. Mercury is in charge of the News. Negative Pluto manipulates the News to make it a powerful tool for controlling the masses. Positive Pluto shows Mercury where it lost integrity by having glossed over or downplaying something important because it may have been more expedient in serving an unconscious agenda. The Pluto activation sent Mercury to retrace his steps, looking for cues and clues and missed opportunities to get the whole picture.

One week into the New Year, Mercury is back in Sagittarius, sign of Truth, Beliefs, Foreigners, and Other Cultures, for a few days, at the exact spot the Sun was in when Mercury did its about-face. Now, the Sun, representing the Heart, Life Force and Consciousness, meets Pluto, shedding Light on the Dark Lord’s public and secret agendas.

Mercury turns direct on January 8th, to cover the late degrees of Sagittarius and first half of Capricorn for the third and final time of this retrograde phase. It is not until, the first new moon of 2017, on January 28th, the Aquarius New Moon, that Mercury comes out of the shadow of this retrograde cycle and reaches new territory. Ironically, this time, the new territory is one more activation from Pluto. Heaven only knows how this will all unfold.

Though a new calendar year starts each year, on January 1st, energetically, 2017 is going to take a few weeks to really shift into the fresh promise of its Number 1 numerology. So, I encourage you to make a plan that is flexible enough to morph, as your thinking about your desires for 2017 inevitably will.

January 28th is also Chinese New Year.  This one will be the year of the Fire Rooster. 2016 was the year of the Fire Monkey and we all know how dynamic that has been. Still, Roosters are a little less volatile than monkeys, so there is that. We’re not done with the fire yet, but with any luck we have learned enough to be able to use it skillfully, for cooking up something great, rather than continue to play with it and get burned. The fire and chaos of 2016 enabled us to release and purify old patterns, people places and things that no longer serve the greater good in our lives. May we use the fires of 2017 to light up a world that is weary of the death and destruction and create something extraordinary for ourselves and everyone we meet. One person at a time, things change. One creative idea at a time, minds change. One bright light at a time, the darkness gives way to the dark.

And on this sad day of learning of the passing of yet another of our beloveds, Carrie Fisher, may we all remember how precious this life is and the difference one person can and does make. Let’s not waste a moment!

With Love and Gratitude for all of you and all of it,

Jodi

Mercury Rx – The Trickster Sheds New Light on Old Illusions

Labyrinth - Eau Claire, Wisconsin - 2004 Jodi Lilly

Mercury went retrograde, for the third time this year, on Saturday, October 4th. This means that between now and October 26th, we will do well to approach our lives in terms of re’s. You can open the dictionary to the page where you first find a word beginning with the letters r-e, and find good instruction for how to best navigate this time. Reap, reconsider, reconstruct, recreate, redeem, redefine, redistribute, refinance, refine, regenerate, and so on.

What you don’t hear as much about is the fact that this is a beautiful time for reconnecting with people, places and things that once seemed lost to us. Memories resurface; old friends reappear; long-forgotten journal entries are read through new eyes that reveal deeper insight into the real meaning beneath the thoughts that made their way to the page, so long ago. Time also takes on a different quality. Nothing is as straight-forward as it once seemed. We begin to realize that time is not linear, at all. Rather it circles and cycles around and through us. We never do something once, we act it out with different people, in different situations, at different ages, until we know the subject matter of our lives inside and out.

If we play our proverbial cards right, Mercury’s retrograde phase can be a magical and enchanting time of seeing behind the curtain, to what the wizard that is our subconscious has really been up to. If we are willing to look we can see far beyond what things appeared to be, at first glance, on our rush through these busy, hustle bustle days that make up our lives. In order to see clearly, we must step back, shift our perspective and open not only our eyes, but our mind. This is how insights come. This is how we become wiser. This is how we evolve, moving from merely going through the motions of surviving to stepping into a place of mastery; in which we can thrive.

The spiritual path is not about gaining and obtaining. It is about releasing and relinquishing those things we once used to define us. Becoming spiritually enlightened requires letting go of who we thought we were so we can be more of who we really are.

Mercury’s Gone Retrograde and So Have I

SAMSUNG CSC
This picture was taken by a friend at a Friday night hoop jam at a retreat in Hawaii. I had just gotten into a good hoop flow as she was snapping a few shots. Suddenly, the hoop launched from my hand and flew across the floor! It happens. All the time. Pretty much any time we pick up the hoop we hoopers know that sooner or later it will either fall or be flung from our hand, just about the time we felt like we were getting somewhere.

Life is the same way, sometimes. You roll along feeling like you know what you are doing and where you are going and then seemingly out of the blue your brain plays a little trick on you and the thing you were so sure you’d done correctly; exactly the way you’d done it before, doesn’t work. I did an astrology chart for a friend about the time Mercury went retrograde and as we started talking, realized the chart was incorrect. I was able to quickly pull up a correct version from an online resource, so all was not lost. As it turned out though, we hadn’t really needed the chart. Whereas in the past this whole thing would have mortified me, today, I trust that there is a reason and do my best to honor what is happening. Later, a little concerned that my software program had malfunctioned, I realized that the only malfunction was created by my not having entered her information into my astrology software exactly right, which is why it rendered the wrong chart…

This particular Mercury retrograde phase has demonstrated in my experience in some interesting ways. Yesterday I was to meet a friend for a quick errand, squeezing it in between other commitments. I input the address into my GPS just to be sure I didn’t waste any time. I ended up about three miles away from our meeting place. “You have arrived at your destination!” announced the lady in my phone… No, I haven’t. A quick call to my friend revealed that I had left the word Plaza out of the GPS search… I got where I needed to be but with less time than we’d hoped for. Next, I rushed home for a Skype call and got a phone call saying she couldn’t get Skype to work. We fiddled with it for fifteen minutes until finally, SUCCESS! We were off and running.

On the other hand, I set up an online account, I’ve been meaning to create for a while now, that allows me to share pictures with friends and family easily and privately; found some important papers I’d misplaced; retrieved a case containing some very expensive headphones, that had absentmindedly been put into the waste basket and buried by papers; and I made some upgrades to my websites.

When glitchy things happen we are being shown that:
1. We have an opportunity to do things differently
2. We’re not paying close enough attention to what we are doing
3. We’re moving faster than is wise right now

Mercury’s retrograde phase is the time to pick up loose ends that we dropped at some earlier time, reconnect with people from our past, clean up our files and records (just in time for filing income tax returns) and rest. As we slow down it is so much easier to see what matters to us and what we are ready to release from our lives. This is not the time to start something brand new but it might be perfect for reconstituting something that had value for us in the past and would bring joy to our life today if we pick it up and dust it off.

Mercury’s current retrograde cycle began on February 6 and will end of February 28th. You can make the most of this time by redoing, reconsidering, refining, recycling, reviewing, reuniting, remembering, revealing, reconstructing, redirecting, recapitulating, restoring, refinancing, replacing and recreating. If you play your cosmic cards right, by the end of the month your life could be running smooth and shining like a new penny.

Love,
Jodi

Venus Has Gone Retrograde and the Moon is on the Wane

Gemini Full Moon

Gemini Full Moon

2013 has been a year of tremendous change, the world over. Sometimes it is hard to grasp how quickly things can flip or completely transform. Much has come to light that was held in secrecy for decades. At the same time, amazing new information, technologies and developments have been revealed that offer tremendous promise, reminding us that we are moving through a time like no other. The more we can reconnect to our hearts and follow the guidance they offer, the more easily we will navigate these times.

The last full moon of 2013 lit up the night sky in the sign of Gemini on December 17th. At the Solstice, on December 21/2, Venus entered its retrograde phase, to travel backward in the sign of Capricorn for the entire month of January. Astrology allows us to see the natural cycles of life and their timing: conception, becoming, flowering, peaking, distributing, diminishing, dissolving and renewal. This waning of the moon and retrograde Venus both indicate that between now and the end of the year is prime time for considering what has value (Venus) in your life today, and consciously releasing anything that no longer fits or works for you. Whether there is an old habit you’ve been meaning to change, a relationship you’ve outgrown or a closet full of clothes that you just don’t wear anymore, the stars are aligned to support you in letting go so you can once more be wholeheartedly in the flow of your life.

Freedom, the freedom to be who we really are, comes only when we have let go of all the stuff that we are not. Many of us once gladly laid claim to labels and titles and identities and stuff and nonsense, believing they made us somehow more than we were without them. Today, we want to use our creativity and intelligence and do something that not only makes our hearts sing, but makes a real difference in the world.

Waking up to the fact that nothing outside ourselves can give us any value that we don’t already possess within us can be a challenge. Continuing to do things that we know are no longer right for us, however, can feel like death. So, if you’ve been feeling the urge to let some things go, there’s never been a better time than now. In lightening up now, you create a vacuum that allows you to attract something new that feels just right.

Wishing you all a peaceful late December and beautiful visions for a shiny New Year.

Love, Jodi

Dancing to the Land of Ahs

August 31, 2006~16 ~2
The Sun just finished a busy journey through watery Cancer that included lots of ups and downs, two Cancer New Moons (a rare occurrence) and a couple of eclipses that set off all manner of change. Hard to believe it all happened in just a month. Family, emotions, security, nurturing, care-giving, and business have all been high priorities on the minds of most. And now, the Sun has moved into Leo. Leo is the fiery sign of the heart, ruled by the Sun. It’s time to dry those tears, put those worries aside and celebrate the gifts of life and love.

I have felt a call to dance for decades now. I was never very good at the actual dancing part but have always loved music and in my mind, at least, I knew I could move. Ten years ago I took my first dance class; a salsa class at a community center. I learned a few steps and loved the music but other things took priority and after a few sessions I stopped taking classes.

Since then I have taken a hula, jazz and belly dance. For one reason or another none of those styles or classes felt right to me. I began thinking dance wasn’t really for me, after all. Then someone told me about Nia and how it had changed her life. She said it was more than a dance or exercise class, it had become a way of life for so many women who were looking to embody their Goddess nature and live more joyfully in their bodies.

After looking for a class in the area for two years, I finally attended my first Nia class in May. Katleen, our fabulous teacher, made it easy, even for me, to follow along and before I knew it I was dancing. I wasn’t good, but I was having a great time in a room full of women moving together, led by a teacher I could relate to who so beautifully led us in this dance. We embodied our spirits, felt our connection to the Goddess, danced heaven and earth into our experience and pulsed into the joy of being alive through graceful, powerful movement.

I have been to every class since. Each time it is getting a little easier. Nia has helped me to have a joyful physical experience of stretching beyond my comfort zone, learning to think in new ways, learning to be in ways I’d never before considered. And now I’m dancing to some really fabulous music, twice a week, every week, at 8:00 AM.

Being an astrologer has meant having to step out of my personal experience of life and view it through a lens that is impersonal and detached. So many of the ideas Kathleen introduces in class are things that I have thought and written about and spoken about with others. In class, though, we bring them into the dance so the body can know and express them. Dancing has, even in this short time, helped me to be more grounded in my writing and work and to feel more present, regardless of what I am doing.

Learning to do something physical that you enjoy that stretches you beyond your comfort zone keeps you young, in mind as well as body. It strengthens you so you can more gracefully and effectively face other challenges. Grace is dependent on strength. Flexibility and being light on our feet help you to move with grace through these uncertain times. My spirit has been urging me to dance for years. It wasn’t just dance, as it turns out, it was discovering the ‘just right’ place that I am coming to through Nia, that finally delivered me to the land of ahs.

Let yourself experiment with doing new things you love. When you find the ones that make your spirit sing, you are well on your way. What is that ‘just right’ place for you? As the Sun enters Leo, remember, joy is of the essence. Take the time to play, be creative, take the spotlight if it calls you, honor your passion and lead with your heart. Celebrate being you!

Every Day Is A Good Day For Something

Branches in the Sun~Resized
For some mysterious reason some days are easy and others, well, don’t you wish you’d just stayed in bed? I think many people read their horoscope in the newspaper hoping it will tell them this is a good day for them. The good news is, every day can be a good day for you.

Today, for example, Mercury has caught up with the Sun and the Moon is in Aries. This is an especially good day for self-care, self-reflection and speaking from the heart about our feelings. These are a few elements of the energetic atmosphere of today. Whether you use this information or disregard it is up to you.

The astrological weather, like life, is multi-faceted and constantly changing. One cycle overlays the next, compounding and complicating the effects of both. And there are never just two occurring. The planetary cycles are archetypal reflections of our lives–filled with periods of growth and change, building and tearing down, and finally relinquishing something we realize belongs to our history not our future. Despite the complexities, humans are graced with the capacity for focusing on on one thing at a time. We can tune in or tune out at will.

In this ‘information age’ when the internet and media crank out ‘news’ every day, all the time, it is easy to become overwhelmed and lose track of what really matters. I say, keep it simple. Some things are naturally more important to us than others. Individuality means the important things are different for everyone.

Astrology offers a simple way of understanding where you can benefit most from focusing your overall energy and attention and where to focus today to work in harmony with the greater universal cycles of evolution and potential that are in play in your life now. The more you understand your strengths and gifts and even your challenges the easier it is to move away from the stuff that isn’t about you and just wastes your precious time.

Everything really is relative. If you have planned a family reunion picnic in the park and have been up til all hours cooking and preparing, waking in the morning to a thunder storm might feel like a nightmare. On the other hand, if you are someone who has a garden that is badly in need of water, that same storm is an answer to your prayers. Maybe you are planning the reunion AND have a dry garden. Sometimes it isn’t so much the ”storms’ that occur but the timing.

Every day is good for something. Remaining as fluid and flexible as possible helps us to roll with the times when things feel difficult. On those days, I find it helps to remind myself that tomorrow is another day. Doing what you can to simplify your life, releasing the things that are no longer working, is the easiest way I know to create more good days. When we are focused on the things that are most important to us, it is easier to make the best of our time and enjoy the relationships that matter most. The present is a gift. This holy moment will never be again. It is up to you what you do with it and with whom you will share it.

May you find your way that ‘just right’ place of balance within, that allows you to beautifully shine your personal brand of goodness and grace into the world.

Seven-Year Itch ~Cycles of Evolutionary Change

Sunset Slice
If you are one of the millions of people who are currently experiencing major life-changing events, keep in mind that it is not just marriages that succumb to the seven-year-itch. Actually, seven-year cycles are in effect in all areas of life. Science tells us that on average, most cells in the human body change within a seven year period. So, it isn’t surprising that the things we are doing and interested in will change, as well. Taking some time to reflect on what was happening in your life seven years ago can shed new light, allowing you to claim the wisdom gained and release the toxic residue so you are free to start fresh.

The planet, Uranus, (genius, innovation, invention and sudden change) ruler of Aquarius, spends seven years in each sign of the zodiac. This offers clues about why and how things evolve.

The ‘seven-year-itch’ kicks in around the beginning of year six. Often, an Aquarian-type person or event (unexpected, catalytic, bolt-from-the-blue kind of thing) creates such a shift in your perception of life that you just know things will never go back to the way they were. Unrest and dissatisfaction brew beneath the surface. The things you have been doing no longer work and after a while it seems nothing really works, anymore. It is time to either do things differently or do something different.

Astrology helps us to understand life’s natural cycles. There is a time to be still and a time to move, a time to be patient and a time to push through obstacles, a time to hang on and a time to let go, a time for giving your all and a time for giving it all up, there is a time for silent reflection and a time for celebration.

I opened the Light In Motion office and began offering classes, gatherings and a newsletter, in addition to readings, in 2002. Over the past couple of years Light In Motion has been completing its first seven-year cycle. The way I did business wasn’t working very well, anymore. And despite the fact that I talk to people about personal development and evolution every day, I was at a loss as to how to deal with the effects of the changes in my life. Once you change, your circumstances must also change to accommodate the growth that has occurred. The only thing I knew to do at that point was let go and let go and let go, again.

And then one day, it dawned on me that that I could revolutionize my business–take it to a new level and offer new types of service that feel energizing and joyful. The heart of the business remains my love of working with and inspiring others who, like me, know that there is more to life than most people realize and want to enjoy cultivating a life they love. Stay tuned for much more as Light In Motion begins its new evolutionary cycle.

The whole world is different than it was in 2002. What are you itching to release or perhaps revolutionize? There are fresh potentials everywhere, awaiting your notice. What will you include in your new seven-year cycle?

Pluto, Pisces, Aquarius and More Aquarius

04160821Currently, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, the North Node, Chiron and Neptune are all in Aquarius. The Sun is approaching Uranus in Pisces. And Pluto is just getting started in Capricorn. If there were ever a time when extraordinary things were likely, this is it. Over half of the planets of the zodiac are in the signs ruled by the impersonal, anti-grounded signs ruled by the outer planets. True, Capricorn will bring us back to Earth, but Pluto is moving through early Capricorn like a cosmic roto-rooter unearthing all manner of unhealthy government and business practice and procedure. The good news is that Pluto is about transformation. Skeletons and secrets that were buried or kept in vaults or behind boardroom doors are being uncovered and will now be changed in ways that allow for evolution, rather than continuing to poison the ground water from which we all drink.

This ongoing, major line-up of energies in Aquarius, the sign of humanity, invention, technology, revolution, genius and the one who walks to the beat of his/her own drum is opening and offering all manner of fresh opportunity. It may take a while before they become apparent, but rest assured, in this energetic climate, opportunities abound. I like to think of that famously Aquarian drum as the heart. What better beat could there be for keeping pace and passing the time of our lives?

This time is ripe with fresh potentials that were never before possible. If you have been paddling upstream trying to get somewhere you were before, you might want to consider turning your canoe around. We are in the middle of the rapids and there is no going back to where we were even one short year ago.

The evolutionary wheel has turned and the revolution has begun. Things will continue to change. If we choose to make changes based on our vision of what is possible rather than by of our fear of the unknown we will see that we are far from powerless. We are, in fact, powerful beyond measure. What if you let the beauty of what you love be your point of focus?

2009 ~The Year of Miracles

This article was written for my Light In Motion II newsletter, published January 14, 2009 and is cross-posted on my Random Acts of Truth and Beauty blog.

apophysis-090225-1-21A few days ago I was reading something that mentioned 2008 having been the Year of something or other. I wondered what 2009 would be the year of, and immediately heard, “2009 is The Year of Miracles”. Wow! And not a moment too soon, from the sounds of things, lately.

I had to smile at the thought of a year of miracles. I feel the Divine is already right there for us, awaiting our activation of the potentials before us. I see evidence of the miraculous in our election of Barack Obama, in the sudden plummeting of gas prices, and in the shift of energy in the past few weeks that has me feeling a new optimism about what is now possible. These are all potentials that are miraculous in the fact that they were once unexpected and have shifted reality remarkably. Though we may have hoped for them, none of us by force of will or determination could have created them without a little help from the unseen realms.

I don’t know about you, but I take very little for granted these days. When I see something that speaks to me I make a point of stopping to be with it and appreciate it for what it has to offer. Life itself is a series of miracles when I am present to them.

Miracles are really just realized potentials that we are unaware are possible until they occur. They are always love-based, inspiring and uplifting when we witness them. The miraculous is happening all the time. Our true nature is Divine. Humans are born with a natural ability to do many things that we have been taught to believe are miracles. It is just a matter of being present enough to notice, to see the beauty that is literally everywhere we look. More and more people are ready to Be the Change. And there are quite a few of us who are now embracing our lives whole-heartedly with a real Passion for what we are doing. Enough so that we are willing to step up to living and loving as exactly who we are.

If you would like to reconnect with, or discover your Passion, an Intuitive Astrology reading can help. This year promises to be filled with change for everyone. Self-awareness is empowering and allows you to consciously entertain the potentials before you and proactively make choices based on your preferences. The astrology chart offers a helpful guide to your own best timing and is an excellent tool for discovering the most effective strategies for accomplishing your desires. Insights that arise in a reading often reveal potentials and options that were not apparent before we sat down together.

May miracles abound in your New Year.

Aries New Moon~April 5, 2008

Spring has arrived in the northern hemisphere with the promise of new life as this year’s growing season gets under way. The energy of change is particularly palpable and pervasive these early spring days. Dr. John Lilly, who worked extensively with dolphins and interspecies communication, and broke new scientific ground in countless areas said, “Our only security is our ability to change.” The world is changing before our very eyes these days. Change for the sake of change, however is an invitation to more of the same.

As we choose to awaken to more of who we are and expand our self-awareness, we naturally contribute to the awareness available to the whole and change follows in forms that are expansive and life-affirming. “Know thyself,” could be the Aries motto. Aries knows through the experience of living–of acting on that which calls. Through experience we truly know in a way that isn’t possible through observation, study or analysis.

In times like these great opportunities abound, with potentials and possibilities never before imagined. Our task is to recognize and embrace those that spark our individual inspiration to act and that speak clearly to our own heart. If it moves you from within, you are on track and good to go.

The Aries New Moon occurs at 8:55 PM PDT tonight, April 5, 2008. This is the first new moon of the of the natural new year which begins with spring, at the Vernal Equinox. The Aries New Moon marks the official start of the growing season, when Sun (consciousness) and Moon (unconscious and emotions) unite for the first time in the natural annual cycle. This is said to be the most potent day of the year for planting the seeds of intention for what you would like to spark into being as this astrological year unfolds.

Aries is the sign of the initiator, of passion, of breaking ties with what is and striking out on one’s own or leading others to a place they’ve never been before. This is virgin territory; there are no rules; the map is created as each new discovery is made.

The Aries color is blood red, representing the birthing of Self and something new. Their number is, of course, one, being the first sign of the zodiac. Aries reminds us that ndividuality, instinct and inspiration are key to aligned action. In essence, change is what Aries is all about.

At the Aries New Moon we are invited to birth something new and exciting. Out with the old, in with something that gets our energy moving and expands the edges of our current experience. Aries delivers the impetus to strike out on our own and pioneer new ideas into action with courage and enthusiasm that we may not realize we have until we’ve taken those first steps. In following our instincts to do those things that call to us we come into alignment with the energy and circumstances necessary to step into something new or extraordinary. The reward for stepping up and out is a renewed sense of strength and the experience of having stretched to become more than we previously knew we could be. Whatever we do with our time and energy over the next couple of weeks will give shape and substance to our experience as the year progresses and we see the fruits of the seeds we plant today in the coming months.

We all have Aries energy in our astrology chart, and our life, calling us to take courageous action as a path to self-knowledge. A lack of self-awareness results in an ongoing sense of insecurity that undermines our ability to live a contented, effective, fulfilling and successful life. In order to grow wiser and mature we must first know and embrace our true nature. Only then can we know what we have to offer the world and how we can contribute whole-heartedly.

To have courage is to have heart. May the Aries spirit of childlike wonder lead you back to the place in your heart of knowing what you, from your instinctive nature, were born to do. Then, as Goethe said, “Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.” I wish you great and inspiring adventures on each step of your journey into springtime.
