Have you noticed lately that your fuse is a little shorter than it normally is or that the challenging situations you managed in the past are suddenly unbearable? Lately, what I think of as the ‘universal tension meter’ has been off the charts. Between our exposure to the wild swings on Wall Street and in the mortgage industry, big banks and big business playing a game of corporate Pac-Man, and keeping up with the bizarre antics of this unprecedented U. S. presidential campaign season, attempting to keep a lid on our personal matters can seem overwhelming.
When we finally come to the point at which we just don’t know what to do about something anymore we are as close as we will ever be to resolution. The trick is to wake up enough, mid-crisis, to realize this, so we can remember to let down our defenses and accept whatever it is that feels so overwhelming. As we stop fighting ‘what is’ and take a conscious breath–or as many as it takes–we can finally let the distress wash over and through us and out the other side. Then breathing gets a little easier and shoulders soften and start to drop away from our ears.
When feeling overwhelmed, I have learned to stop and ask myself whether what I am feeling really belongs to me. Often I discover I picked up on a wave of emotion I took in without realizing I had done so because I either wanted to help or felt bad for others. Sometimes I realize I have reverted to an old bad habit of taking on any kind of negative emotion that is around simply because I can feel it. If you have caught yourself doing the same thing, a couple of deep breaths or a brisk walk around the neighborhood works wonders for letting it all go.
Grace enters into any situation in which she is allowed. Perhaps it has been Grace all along. knocking on our door, turning up the heat on the situation, attempting to get our attention, to remind us that we always have a choice. She is always available and only a breath away.
Love and fear cannot coexist in the same space. The moment you stop long enough to let go of your resistance to that which has you on the run and turn to face it, is the moment you awaken, once again, to the fact that love is the truth of who and what you are. Love always leads us home to the center of Who We Really Are. When we come back into alignment with our essence it is easy to see that all the fearful goings-on that ever plague us are just part of this sacred, often crazy, game of Life we are playing.
There is no getting around or away from Love. There is just forgetting and remembering, giving and receiving, breathing in and breathing out.
Ahhh, that feels much better.
